Multimedia presentation training for supporting career developments of women
scientists is divided into basic course and expert course

PARTICIPATING IN BIS-WIST programs

1. HACCP Team leader training

 

To secure the hygienic safety of fishery industry of Busan area, HACCP team
leader training will proceed.

   – Participants: (reserved) women scientists (expected trainee: 30)

   – Date: 27th ~ 29th August 2008 (3days) 23hours

   – Place: Dongseo University, U-IT building, Room No.702

   – Fee: 150,000 Korean won for each person (half of the total education fee),
     all other fee is supported by BIS-WIST

   – Benefits for participants: education certificate issued by Korea Food
     and Drug Administration will be provided

Finding out competent person who hopes to join the site training in the local
industry and provide them the with internship program

   – Company providing site training: science and technology related small
     and medium companies within the area

   – Favor for participants: Fee of site training (600,000won is supported
     for a person), casualty insurance within the period

Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute for Supporting Women

in Science and Technology(DGIS-WIST)

Inaugurated on 24th June.

The opening ceremony of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Institute for Supporting Women in Science and Technology ( DGIST-WIST) was held on June 24, 2008, in Techno Building of Kyungpook National University. The university, in collaboration with Daegu metropolitan city and Gyeongbuk province, supports this institute. Its director is Dr. Won-jung Lee, professor at Kyungpook National University Medical School.

The DGIST-WIST develops and conducts job training programs, suitable for local situation, for women scientists in the area; it also supports their career development by improving recruitment networks both domestic and abroad. Affiliated with NIS-WIST, this institute will focus on locally specialized projects, namely recruitment-specific training programs for women seeking employment in textile, IT, and BT industries. 

Director Won-jung Lee has high hopes and ambitious plans. By retraining local women in science and engineering, she hopes the institute will improve their job opportunities and enhance the social status of these career women. She also hopes a significant influx of career women in science and engineering will eventually solve the perennial problem of small and medium-sized businesses, the shortage of qualified manpower, in Daegu and Gyeongbuk province.

Present at the opening ceremony were Dr. Dong-il Rho, president of Kyungpook National University, Sang-gi Seo, congressman, Jong-won Lee, Official of human resources policy in Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Bong-gyu Park, Vice mayor for political affairs of Daegu,. Head of industry and academy consortium of local university and others have participated. Kong Ju Bock Lee, director of NIS-WIST and professor of Ewha Womans University, delivered a memorial lecture titled ???Situation and role of Women Institute for Supporting Women in Science and Technology???

The 3rd term recruitment camp for Female Scientist

in Busan, Ulsan, Gyeong-nam opened

Busan???Ulsan???Gyeongnam Institute for Supporting Women In Science and Technology(hereinafter called BIST-WIST) opened the 3rd term recruitment camp for Female Scientist in Busan, Ulsan, south Gyeong-sang from 23rd to 24th May, 2008 at Gyeon-ju as a information management business.

BIST-WIST opened the program with complementing it based on evaluation results from last two recruitment camps, and, through above activities, It became a regular recruitment camp and supplemented the imperfect parts of regular recruitment education. I also gave participants a chance to experience mock recruitment procedure. The camp selected participants among 130 applicants and 87 participated in the recruitment camp finally. There were practical educations for recruitment such as image making, courtesy in the office and business etiquette, preparing resume & cover letter and interviewing manner on the first day, and mentoring and mock interview program with 9 company representatives and chief of human resources team on the second day.

 

BIS-WIST opened ‘Jang Youngsil’ after-school science study teacher training program

Busan???Ulsan???Gyeongnam Institute for Supporting Women In Science and Technology(hereinafter called BIS-WIST) perceived that the essence of revitalizing after-school is the quality and, through retraining local women scientists and cooperation with ministry of education and front elementary schools, is preparing teacher pool which can be used as after-school scientist teachers.

Through the matching service of BIS-WIST, These women scientists are teaching students at science class, local children center, resident self-administration center and elementary nurture class located in Busan after school. So, BIS-WIST opened Jang, young-sil after-school science study teacher training program targeting women scientists living in Gyeongsangnam-do from 21st June to 26th July, 2008(on every Saturday) at Gyeong-sang University (located in Jin-ju, South Gyeong-sang province) based on the conclusion that more qualified after-school Science classes are severely needed in Gyeongsangnam-do area excluding Busan.

 

Participation in NCRW Annual Conference, USA

Busan???Ulsan???Gyeongnam Institute for Supporting Women In Science and Technology(hereinafter called BIS-WIST) has tried continuously to build a network with foreign female related institution and organization after opening of the BIS-WIST in September, 2006.

As a reward of the efforts, through the approval of NCRW, USA, it was registered officially on the international member institution list as a female related institution.

NCRW(National Council for Reserch on Women) is an organization which performs the role of policy research and suggestion to affect female related popular consideration, altercation and policy cooperating with 112 famous policy research institution.

By the request of NCRW, on 5th June, 2008, Shin, hye-ja, Chief of BIS-WIST has participated in NCRW Annual Conference and introduced BIS-WIST as a new member and presented the introduction and situation of local female scientist supporting policy of Korea

BIS-WIST will make an effort to magnify the position of local female scientist at international society and build a bridge to foreign countries through building network with foreign countries, finding the way how to cooperate and research.

DCIS-WIST News

A 2nd term Science Communicator training opened

Daejeon Chungnam Institute for Supporting Women in Science and Technology(hereinafter called DCIS-WIST)  is operating the 2nd term Science Communicator training for 12 weeks from 4th June to 20th August. This training focused on training specialty which can deliver scientific knowledge to people more easily and excitingly by including not only programs related with science such as physics, astronomy, chemistry, nuclear chemistry, geology, sports science, science history, science writing and others but also programs such as juvenile psychology, cultural anthropology and others.
And the training enabled the participants to improve their talents as science commentator through exploring science hall and contents presentation which is carried out after special training
Science Communicator training was opened for the first time in Daejeon and Chungcheongnam-do and already 30 students finished the course. The training enables the students to be teachers of science class and science commentators in science hall through close cooperation with National Science Museum and contributes to job creation for local women scientists 

 

Mathematic model study class teacher training opened

Daejeon Chungnam Institute for Supporting Women in Science and Technology(hereinafter called DCIS-WIST)   opened a program which improves the quality of science education and enables women scientists to enter into society by using jobless and retired women scientists. Mathematic model study class teacher training was the first step of the program and has opened since last 19th June.

This program is for training mathematics teacher who can explain various theory of mathematics easily by using mathematic model after studying the models which were equipped in science hall.
To use the graduators of the course, DCIS-WIST maximized the efficiency of training by opening Mathematic model study class in the Jang Youngsil science study which is opening during vacation with cooperating with National Science Museum.
Therefore superior women scientists, who completed training, can have a job as a science teacher of National Science Museum and can have a capability to help students to study science at the school or Mathematic model study class after school
And, by teaching students using sculptures, which were installed at National Science Museum, such as Mobius strip, Klein bottle, Hanoi tower, Cheomseongdae (astronomical observatory), effect of education and training were improved.

 

Installation of maternity protection room and management supporting project began

Daejeon Chungnam Institute for Supporting Women in Science and Technology(hereinafter called DCIS-WIST)   planned ???installation of maternity protection room and management supporting project??? as a project which will figure out the difficulties of female scientist and improve their job, and selected 3 targeting organizations.

According to the 2007 survey on difficulties of female scientist who has a job, the most imminent difficulties are in the order of ???practical operations of maternity leave???, ???preparation for nurturing facility in the company???, ???installment of maternity protection room???
So, DCIS-WIST, targeting research institutions of Dae-duk special district, began to collect supporting projects including elastic methods such as installment of maternity protection facilities in the existed female restroom or installment of maternity protection room up to the organization???s condition and finally Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Agency for Defense Development and Institute for Information Technology Advancement were finally selected
The selected institutions will perform the supporting project for 6 months from June to November and through the evaluation on results of the project, DCIS-WIST will magnify the supporting institutions in 2009.
